How does a public wireless LAN (PWLAN) actually work?

The basic idea behind PWLAN is a single piece of existing technology used on many notebooks for communication within the company or flexibly at home to allow for quick connection to the Internet in public places such as hotels, airports, train stations, etc. (what are referred to as «hotspots») too, making slow and complicated connections via a modem and ISDN a thing of the past.

This technology goes by different names such as 802.11b/g/n/a/ac, Wi-Fi, wireless LAN, WLAN, etc. and must exist on your notebook or smartphone.

What does «SSID» mean?

SSID stands for «service set identifier», or rather the name of individual WLAN networks.

What does «DHCP» mean?

DHCP stands for «dynamic host configuration protocol». This is a process that automatically assigns configuration data, such as an IP address, network mask, and default gateway, etc. to clients in a network.

How do I use a «PWLAN»?

The procedure is the same almost everywhere:

  1. Switch on the notebook.
  2. Connect to your desired wireless network/SSID.
  3. Launch your browser.
  4. You will be automatically directed to a landing page.
  5. Authenticate yourself via SMS, voucher, or other methods depending on your location.
  6. You will then be able to access the Internet and can surf, receive and send e-mails, or access your company's network if your notebook is equipped for this purpose.

What are the standard settings for MONZOON public wireless LAN?

  • Wireless LAN SSID: normally «MONZOON» (capital letters!). The SSID can vary depending on location
  • Encryption: switch off
  • ID address assignment: automatic/DHCP
  • Proxy settings: switch off

In your notebook's system control/Internet options.

  • Internet options/connections: Select «only select if no network connection exists» auswählen.

Why do I need to sign up (authenticate myself) in the first place?

In Switzerland, Internet providers are obliged to ensure compliance with the Federal Act on the Surveillance of Postal and Telecommunications Traffic (STPA). Article 22 (1) STPA stipulates that, if an offense is committed, the Internet provider is obliged to provide the competent authorities with all information leading to the identification of the author. The SMS identification of anonymous pre-paid users or similar methods (voucher codes, boarding-card scanners, etc.) is carried out for this purpose.

What does «roaming» mean?

Roaming is a well-known expression from the cell-phone sector. Not only can you use your cell phone in your own country via your operator's network, but also networks in cities you visit when traveling abroad. The same mechanism also applies in the world of WLAN hotspots.

What is «Eduroam»?

Eduroam is an international cooperation of universities and scientific organizations with the intention of providing employees and students with Internet access at all participating sites. You can therefore use your university user login to also connect to the Eduroam network of another university that participates in the Eduroam project.

How do I terminate my connection again?

Normally, you do not have to do anything. Your authentication is also valid for your next use. However, you will need to re-enter your password after a certain amount of time. If you want to force this process, please enter logout.monzoon.net in your browser and click «logout».

The landing page is not appearing automatically.

I have checked all my settings and it is still not working.

  • Manually enter login.monzoon.net or 1.1.1.1 in your browser and confirm with «ENTER».
  • or
  • Switch your notebook off and on again.

Can I use my SMS code from my cell phone on my notebook too?

Yes. The SMS code can be used on three different devices at the same time.

My WLAN connection is frequently interrupted

The following may help:

  • Where possible, use the 5-GHz frequency band, such as 802.11a, 802.11ac, or 802.11a/n. Since the channel band is larger and is (still) used considerably less often, interruptions are rarer and the throughput is better.
  • Switch off any energy-saving functions for the WLAN card.
  • Change, at least as a test, the location from where you are accessing the WLAN. There may be an interfering factor in this wireless cell. The increasing dissemination of all sorts of applications that use the 2.4-GHz frequency band (which the WLAN also uses) can lead to interference. All manner of different things could cause this interference: unknown WLAN wireless networks, microwaves, wireless cameras, motion detectors, wireless microphone systems, video transmission technology, etc.

Can I use a WLAN repeater to improve the PWLAN coverage myself?

Using WLAN repeaters does not normally solve coverage problems as such repeaters reduce the throughput in the WLAN wireless cell by taking up the necessary resources itself.

The WLAN signal strength is poor. What should I do?

The coverage of the access points is limited and the transmission power is regulated by legislation. The transmission power or reach cannot easily be increased. Setting up an additional access point is the only thing that will help in this case. Please contact the venue owner (e.g. your hotel).
